Cross Contraction:

Compulsively checking anxiety-producing information, often via social media, aka doomscrolling, is the result of human curiosity and the product of digital platforms. FOMO, or the fear of missing out, pushes people to keep scrolling. But if social media users persistently attend to negative information on their newsfeed, it is because social media algorithms heed the content users engage in and display posts similar in nature.

This overexposure to negative content has both mental and physical consequences, with the production of stress hormones, especially among young people who spend more time online, around bedtime or when waking up, and even more so since Covid-19. To preserve them, banning smartphones is no solution – as it remains a tool for social integration, and would only be met with defiance. Yet, parents can warn against the risks and reduce exposure with ritualized disconnected moments or time-regulated apps.
