Anticipation - Elements of correction:
• Feeling misled — artists said they had been assured that the event was nonpartisan and inclusive of all states; later political branding or presidential involvement appeared inconsistent with those assurances.
• Symbolic withdrawal — performers do not merely cancel entertainment: they withdraw cultural legitimacy and make the dispute visible to audiences beyond institutional politics.
• Presidential presence — a president may legitimately represent the nation at a civic anniversary, but personal branding, campaign-style rhetoric, partisan partners or unequal control can shift representation into appropriation.
• Patriotism vs partisanship — patriotism can celebrate a shared polity while allowing criticism and plural memories; partisanship presents one political camp’s values, leaders or historical narrative as the nation itself.
• Necessary nuance — politicised does not automatically mean illegitimate. The issue is whether alternative voices remain represented and whether public celebration is used to confer electoral or ideological advantage.
